Homeowner Maintenance of Septic Systems Course

Washington County Expo Sales Facility – August 27, 2021

Come attend the Homeowner Maintenance of Septic Systems Class for FREE on Friday, August 27, 2021, in Brenham, TX at the Washington Co. Expo Sales Facility located at 1305 E Blue Bell Road.

The 2-hour class provides a basic understanding of the operational and maintenance activities of conventional systems and explains how activities within the home impact septic systems. Presentations will cover the treatment processes, health and safety considerations, and an overview of how to inspect and maintain the system. This course also provides answers to the most frequently asked septic system questions, including when to pump out a tank and what can or cannot go down the drain. Program is presented in cooperation with the Mill Creek Watershed Partnership. An overview of the Mill Creek Watershed Protection Plan project will be provided immediately prior to the program.

This program does NOT certify homeowners to maintain their aerobic wastewater management system.

Pre-registration for the event is now open and accepted online at https://washington.agrilife.org/septic/ or by calling the Washington County Extension Office at (979) 277-6212 ext. 2.  The course is FREE, but registration is REQUIRED by August 25, 2021.

In the past, approximately 25 % of the U.S. homes used septic systems.  Today, approximately 37% of the homes being built have onsite wastewater treatment systems.  Onsite systems are now considered a permanent solution for treating wastewater.  Consequently, it is vital that residents maintain them regularly so that they do not pollute the environment and pose health hazards to people.  All onsite wastewater treatment systems require operation and maintenance.  To understand how to operate and maintain onsite wastewater treatment systems, it helps to know how they work and what factors affect them.

Proper operation and maintenance can protect your family’s health, protect the environment, and increase your systems lifespan, saving you money in the long run.  Learning about your septic system can be fun and may help prolong the life of the system. Septic systems are not “flush and forget” systems! Therefore, maintenance is essential to ensure proper function and longevity of your septic system. Attendees will gain a better understanding of how to maintain their septic system to protect the health of their family and the environment.

Funding for this effort is provided through Federal Clean Water Act §319(h) Nonpoint Source Grant administered by the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
